Easy Ways to Green Your Beauty Routine and Save Money

I came across this great article from Daily Makeover. In short, Rachel Hayes tells us 5 Easy Ways to Green our beauty routine. Not only are these tips great for the environment, but great for our wallets as well!

Rachel Haye's Tips....

1. Save water by turning it off while you're waiting for your hair conditioner or hair mask to sink in when you take a shower. - I do this too, however, I hate to admit that it's hard to turn off the warm water during cold weather. Here's another tip that I do to save water, when washing your face, turn off the water when lathering your face and turn the water back on when you rinse your face.

2. Pick a body or face scrub that has naturally sourced granules like crushed almond or walnut. Many scrubs out there contain sythentic ingredients that can harm our ocean critters.

3. Use bar hand soap instead of liquid hand soap. According to Rachel Rayes, bar soap lasts longer than liquid hand soap. I can attest to that, because hand soap is more concentrated than liquid soap. However, I still prefer liquid soap...bar soap leaves a residue.

4. Whip up your own beauty treatments instead of buying prepackaged ones. I'm sure all beauty bloggers/addicts can justify this statement. Homemade brush cleansers and facials are not only inexpensive, but just as effective as other products on the market.

5. Don't over-serve yourself. Go easy on product application and prevent product overload. Rachel Raye suggests to "use only a dime-size of shampoo, a quarter size of conditioner, a pea size of face cream, and a shot-glass size of body lotion" to prolong the use of beauty products.

My Tips::

1. Instead of throwing away empty beauty containers, if possible, try to reuse them for something else. I have a ton of mineral makeup sample containers and reuse them for other makeup storage uses.

2. Use a brush instead of disposable cosmetic wedges. It will eliminate some of your trash and a brush will provide better application.

3. Recycle, if possible. Check your beauty products if they can be recycled. For example, MAC has a their recycling program - bring in their empty containers and you will be rewarded for a full sized lip or eye product.

NYX Concealer in a Jar - Great for undereyes!

I was in need of a good under eye concealer to conceal my bags under my eyes that didn't break the bank. A couple months ago, I took advantage of Cherry Culture's promotion and decided to take the plunge to try out NYX's Concealer in a Jar in Medium.

For reference, I'm a MAC NC35-40 and Everyday Minerals Buttered Tan.

Product Review: NYX Concealer in a Jar - Medium

Pros:

• It works as a great under eye concealer - it actually concealed my dark under eye circles.



• It's dirt cheap! $5 is a deal for this concealer.



• Medium is a perfect match for my skin tone. In the jar, it looked a little too pink for my yellow undertones. But once applied, it blended in beautifully.



• I love the smooth and creamy finish. I have dry skin and find that powder concealers accentuate my dry skin. However, this concealer hydrates and moisturizes the under eye area.

Cons:

• Not readily available in stores - I've searched stores that sold NYX and never came across this concealer. I've only seen this avaliable online.



• The jar packaging - The jar packaging is not the most hygienic way to store this concealer. You can either use your finger or brush for application.



• For those with acne prone skin - I would not recommend applying to blemishes or any part of your face. It does contain Mineral Oil and will break you out. I made a mistake and applied a little too much under eye concealer that went below by under eye and woke up the next day with a small cluster of breakouts.

The Bottom Line: I have only used this product as an under eye concealer and it does live up to my expectations. However, I did not test this product out for concealing blemishes or other face imperfections due to the Mineral Oil. As a word of caution, for those with acne-prone skin, stick with using this product for under eyes only. I have always been a huge fan of NYX single eye shadows and am now a fan of their Concealer in a Jar.

FAB TIP:: If you plan on purchasing online, Cherry Culture is the best bet. Cherry Culture has promotions and their NYX products come out less expensive than NYX's main website.

Bad shampoo? Don't throw it out just yet...

Ever come across a shampoo that sadly disappointed you? I have...plenty of times. Most recently, I had this issue with Pantene Pro-V shampoo - and by the way - I hate Pantene Pro-V. So what do you do with a bad shampoo? I'm assuming that you're first instinct would be to throw it out, because obviously you are not going to use it on your hair. But don't throw it out so fast, especially if it was expensive shampoo - because you can use your unwanted shampoo for other purposes.

New uses for my unwanted shampoo:

• Makeup brush cleanser - Mix one part shampoo to two parts water and ta-da! - a homemade cosmetic brush cleanser! However, this might not be optimal for those with acne prone skin.


• Hair brush/comb cleanser - Mix one part shampoo to one part water and use this solution to clean your hair brushes. Pantene Pro-V did any excellent job of cleaning my hair brushes and got rid of the oil build up.


• Instant bathtub bug killer - From time to time, I come across an unwanted visitor in my bath tub. Rather than screaming for someone to kill the visitor or drown it in water, a squirt of shampoo will do the trick...INSTANTLY! Trust me...this works! hehe


• Hand Soap - Depending on the type of shampoo, you can easily turn your unwanted shampoo to instant hand soap.


• Shaving cream - If your unwanted shampoo is more on the creamy side, you can use it as a shaving

Fabuless Beauty turns 1!

Time flew by so fast...Fabuless Beauty turns 1 today! Just a short year ago, I was inspired by so many wonderful beauty bloggers out there to create my own blog. I honestly thought that it was a fad of mine that would quickly be dropped within months. However, I proved myself wrong!

This past year...

• I came across new and existing beauty blogs that inspire me to continue blogging
• My beauty knowlege and beauty purchases has skyrocketed
• I've changed the layout to this blog numerous times, before settling with this layout - btw, a new layout is in the works!
• Fabuless Beauty joined the Total Beauty Community - it opened the doors to more windows of opportunities to new products and knowledge
• Fabuless Beauty got her own URL
• The content and writing here at Fabuless Beauty has vastly improved! - I cringe looking back at my old posts
• Reader viewership has substantially increased - I remember I was elated once I hit 100 page views a day!
