Passport to Beauty - Tips from N.&S America and Australia

Okay, after finishing the book….I admit..that some of the tips mentioned we already know and are a little redundant. I’m just going to give the tips I found new or interesting. Enjoy!

Tips from North/South America and Australia

- Cracked heels? >> Girls from the Midwest use hoof cream to heal their dry skin…lol…I don’t think I’ll ever try this

- Dry skin >> Hawaiians use turbinado sugar as an exfoliant. It’s more gentle than a salt scrub. (Personally, I’ve heard about this but never tried it…I assume the sugar dries faster)

- Big Hair Secret >> Texan women are known for their big hair. Their secret? They use sea salt mixed with shampoo - this will remove product buildup, instant volume and make your hair shiny.

- Cheap teeth whitening >>Brush your teeth with a little baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Also, wear red lip colors can make your teeth look yellow. (Personally, I’ve used hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash before brushing my teeth, and my teeth are actually whiter!!)

- Many uses of Apple Cider Vinegar >> Swimsuit models say that drinking Apple Cider Vinegar every morning for faster metabolism and better skin. (I read that this is great for those with acne too, it works as a natural antibiotic. Personally, I haven’t tried this…but if you do, drink through a straw because this will cause tooth decay with prolonged use).

Okay, that’s it for now…

Passport to Beauty - Tips for Europe and Asia

As promised, I’m going to list several beauty tips from the book that I found very useful and interesting. There are actually a lot more tips in the book, but I’m only listing the good ones to me..hehe. I notice that lot of products mentioned in the books are stuff we can find in our local beauty store or market, such as various oils and are great alternatives than buying expensive products!

Tips from Europe
- Eye makeup remover>> Almond Oil as a makeup remover - this delicately removes eyemakeup, while hydrating your eye area (I might give this a try)

- Lash growth >> Castor Oil - when applied to lashes it can stimulate and strengthen lash growth. ( A bottle a CVS costs about $3)

- Lip softener >> The Polish use Honey, yes honey…to soften their lips. It acts as a humectant and draws moisture from the air…Grab that honey bottle from your kitchen and give it a try!

- Burned skin?? >> Instead of reaching for that bottle of aloe vera, why don’t you try sour cream? lol….that’s what the Russians do. Okay…I found this a little weird, but if you dont’ have aloe vera….you can try this??

- Less makeup is more >> Heavy makeup can look too fake…so to make it more natural…apply foundation first and then follow up with concealer in necessary ( I admit that I use this technique and it makes me look less cakey and I get my makeup done faster!)

Tips from Asia
-
Having problem sleeping?? >> In the Middle East, women place a bowl of Jasmine potpourri next to their bed. This is suppose to reduce anxiety and relax you. (I might give this a try, sounds cheap and at least my room will smell good!)

- Instant Face Brightener >> Mix 1 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a circular motion. A secret to radiant skin from flight attendants from Singapore Airlines

- Strengthening thinning hair >> Indians use coconut oil to help strengthen and get shiny hair. It’s considered one of the riches oils in the world and is great for stimulating hair growth, repairing split ends and strengthen hair altogether. (This sounds really promising, but it might be a little too oily for my thin hair).

Okay, that’s it for now….later on in the week…I’ll share US beauty tips and Australia….=)

Passport to Beauty

This past weekend, I stopped by my local library….yes, library…to check out a couple books to borrow. Ever since college, sadly I’ve stopped reading actual books so I’m trying to get into the habit of reading books again. One of the books I checked out was “Passport to Beauty - Secrets and Tips from Around the World for Becoming a Global Goddess” by a celebrity makeup artist - Shalin Vadhera. I actually heard about this book awhile back as a “must-read” from a magazine, but never got around to reading it.

That night that I got the book, I actually started reading it….So far, I really do like the book - I’ve read about half of it already. The book is filled with tips about beauty - skin, makeup and diet from all over the world. The book is divided into sections by region of the world and within each region, Shalin gives a brief overview of the country region itself before delving into their beauty tips.

Here’s my take on it so far:

Pros - Honestly, I did not know what to expect from this book. The beauty tips the author mentions are inexpensive, homemade remedies that can easily be found in your grocery store or kitchen cabinet - something I did not expect! I found this really great, because I’m incredibly cheap when it comes to beauty products. She does push or even talk about certain brands or products. As a plus, there are tons of homemade skin recipes that seem very easy to do and require very little ingredients.

Cons - Unfortunately, there aren’t any pictures in the book. The books is basically a list of tips, so don’t expect makeup tutorials. And because it’s basically a list, it’s hard to read it for a long time - maybe because I have a short attention span. I find it easier to read a little bit at a time. Also, once you get into the book, some of the stuff gets a little repetitive.

Over the next week, I will list a couple beauty tips that I found useful for myself by region. I won’t list them all at once, because it could be too much information at once. However, I did notice that the author places more emphasis on skin care, than makeup tips, but that didn’t bother me. Most people get their beauty tips from their own country’s magazines, celebrities or friends - so actually getting a global view on beauty was really refreshing. Anyways, I recommend this book for any product/beauty junkie as a great Spring/Summer read.
